Welcome! September 2017

September 2017 will see another fantastic ‘Welcome’ delivered by the University, the largest programme to date, where Team Salford will play a key role within the delivery of some of our most innovative and exciting events ever.

We kick off Fast Track Weekend slightly earlier than scheduled on Thursday 14th at 5.00pm, with a Yoga Sampling Session (within the Outdoor social spaces) at Lowry Accommodation. Yoga Sampling has consistently proven to be one of the most successful forms of student engagement, since we introduced our regular taster sessions across Campus. The shorter form sessions give our students a taste of what they can expect, if they choose to engage within our ever-expanding Fitness Class Programming, and one of the most prominent elements of the Students Union’s ‘Give Sport a Go’ Activity Provision. An additional Yoga Sampling Session, will be delivered within the Accommodation Social Spaces at John Lester Court, on Tuesday 19th at 5.00pm.  Yoga  - in addition to the other activity forms within the Sports Centre’s Fitness Class Timetable, provide our students with a great avenue to #GetActive and meet new people. These sessions are completely free, however spaces are limited, so ensure to get yourself booked onto one of these free sessions via Advantage.

On Friday 15th - ‘Moving in Mile’ with will provide you with a unique opportunity to #GetActive within a social activity setting; providing our students with the opportunity to meet other early arrivals, whilst also using our shorter form run route to get an overview of Peel Park Campus and Peel Park itself! The Students Union’s Run Club Sessions, which take place on Monday and Thursday’s at 6.15pm, will help provide a consistent participation pathway into running, for those that wish to engage in these sessions on a regular basis. The attendance numbers generated at these sessions, in addition to our fundraising 5k events over the past two years, have demonstrated a great appetite on Campus for Running as a form of activity. Therefore, if you are a complete beginner, or you wish to top-up your existing training, this is a perfect format to initially engage yourself in physical activity, when you arrive at the University. Competitive runners, who wish to enhance their running performance, or those who wish to simply use running to enhance their physical fitness, can also pick up a free personal programme (from our Fitness Instructors) as part of their Sports Centre Membership Package.

Cage football returns to Campus at Fast Track Weekend, on Saturday 16th September. Last year, this was a great hit on Campus, with many Staff members being given the run around by our quicker, more skilful students – which was very amusing! Team Salford will be present to give you all the information relating to the Students Unions Football related provision, which includes competitive BUCS Men’s and Women’s Club Sport, in addition to (semi-competitive) recreational programs such as 11 a side Campus Leagues, and the short former Campus Leagues FA 5’s Futsal. The level of football related provision available to students via Team Salford is excellent, so make sure you get yourself involved on Saturday 19th!

For the first time, via our partners Bubble footie; we will be bringing you the unique friendly combat sport ‘Tag Archery’ to Campus, which will be delivered alongside Bubble football (for the first time outdoors!) on Monday 18th September. You really do not want to miss this, we have two of our major events running side by side, as we look to offer unpreceded avenues into physical activity, and generate increased levels of engagement in Sport on Campus.

The Students Union Sports and Activities Fairs take place at the Sports Hall on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st September respectively, which provides our students with a great opportunity to meet with our Sports Clubs and Activity Groups, both of which play an essential role at the University from a Student Experience perspective, so ensure to come down and get a full overview of what they can offer - we hear the socials are fantastic!

Our partners Grenade will also be around both events offering the latest samples within their protein bar range, this was a hugely popular around Varsity last March, and they have a whole new range of products to promote for this Academic Year. Our superb Sport Rehab Team will also be in the Health Hub offering Sports Massage Tasters; this provision is a unique student lead service (delivered in partnership with our Directorate of Sport, Exercise and Physiotherapy.) Sports Centre Members, and Sports Team Members can gain access to the Sports Massage service (delivered on Wednesday afternoons during the BUCS Season) completely free, which offers an unprecedented value to our respective membership packages.
