#GetActive with Team Salford in 2017

2017 #GetActive Campaign - Provision Overview and 2017 Event Calendar

Our Free Day Pass Offer kicks 2017 off in style!

2016 was a landmark year for Sport at the University, with the launch of the #TeamSalford Partnership (alongside the Students Union and The Directorate of Sport Exercise and Physiopherapy) and the Sports Centre receiving the Outstanding Customer Service Vice Chancellors Recognition Award 2015/16, on June 8th 2016 at University Day.

We wish to continue this strong progress, and further expand our levels of Student and Staff engagement, on Campus and beyond, over the course of 2017.

Other objectives achieved in 2016; was the further engagement of a key demographic area, in which the Team Salford Partnership played a prevalent role in, this relates to the substantial increase in the physical engagement of Females in Sport on Campus, via the National (Sport England) #ThisGirlCan Campaign. Events such as Salfords Largest Zumba, for Sport Relief in March (which engaged over 40 participants) and the Outdoor Yoga Sampling sessions, at the Nursing and Midwifery Inductions in March, helped to increase our Female membership representation from 33% to 38%, from February to May 2016. Our overall Sports Centre Membership Level rose 61% from October 2015  – May 2016, which was further indication of those participation objectives being achieved, across various demographic areas, and the success of University Sport as a mechanism to positively impact Student experience, and generate increased levels of student engagement.

Thrughout January, April, June and September 2017; #TeamSalford will have another strong presence at the Nursing Inductions, with a variety of activites planned, to ensure that our Nursing Students arriving on Campus. are provided with a prevalent pathway into consistent physical activity (within a variety of settings) throughout their stay at the University. Our Fitness Class programme, is a tremendous form of student engagement, and has something for everyone, with over 300 regular Class participants a week (during term times) is a great way to #GetActive and meet new people. Ensure to check out our current provision, which is due to have a few fresh and exciting elements introduced....

Alongside our key partners Salfood, #TeamSalford will look to deliver our first ever Sports Day at Media City, with Salfood delivering another (Healthy Eating) cooking pop up, which are always a big hit with our students. Activites such as Table Tennis, and the ever popular Batak Pro Machine, will be in and around the Event, designed  to act as a unique interactive tool for our Students at Media City.

Students Union Activities will also be delivering 2 “Intro to Run Club Events” which will act as a pathway into their (vastly popular) Run Club Sessions, on Monday 23rd and Thursday 26th January. The Run Club has proven to be a tremendously succesful, and socially inclusive form of recreational activity, engaging students from a variety of different backgrounds, consistently engaging with 20+ students per session. Many of the students who participate are new to running, and are engaging within running activity for the first time. This perfectly illustrates the positive social impacts which Running (as a form of activity) is having on our students, from a health and well being perspective. In addition to the Run Club, Sport will also be delivering the Vice Chancellors 5k Fun Run again, to raise money for the Universities Charity. In 2016, 105 of you particpated, helping to raise over £1,500 for Kidscan, Childrens Cancer Research. Alongside Kidscan in December, we also delivered our first ever Festive Fun Run, with over 40 participants signing up, and more than £400.00 raised. The VC Fun Run returns in April 2017, and it is always a pleasure to deliver this on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Helen Marshall. The Run Club, and the high profile running events delivered, is hugely representative of the great appetite for such activity on Campus, and the methodology behind #TeamSalford pushing these as key events during the Student intake period.

We also have the second (Annual) DSAS Sports Day, in partnership with Mind in Salford, which was a huge hit on Campus in 2016. The Sports Day is a modern take on the traditional form of Sports Day Activities. We won’t reveal too much, but we have plenty of unique elements planned for June’s Event…..

The Sports Centre is on course to raise over £3,000 (for designated charities) across the 2016 Calendar Year,  a big thank you to everyone who has contributed (within some form) to some great causes, over the last 12 months or so!

Another great success for #TeamSalford in 2017, was the implementation of the Team Salford Sports Massages. This is a unique student lead service, delivered by our Sport Rehabilitation Students (on a nightly basis) and supervised by their Academic Course Leaders. This is a completely free clinical service, for both members of the SU Sports Teams, and our Sports Centre members. Take a look at our short website piece, for more information on the (Student Lead) Team Salford Sports Massage Clinic. This is just the start of an already prospering colaborative service, which we hope will expand further in 2017.

There are plenty of activity settings, and ways in which you can consistently engage yourself within Sport, as a Student or Staff member at the University. Therefore, the list of activities and events above should be all you need to motivate yourself to #GetActive with us on Campus, over the course of 2017.
